Literacy

At St. Mary’s we teach English so that our students may function in the community, develop relationships and broaden their learning in a range of other subject areas.

English language skills are needed and practised in all aspects of the school day, however all classes also have structured Literacy sessions focussing on the areas of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Strong links between home and school are important for the children’s learning and parental help supports the classrooms.

Teachers structure their classes into small groups and focus their instruction on the individual and group needs of the students, constantly monitoring progress.
